One of the best ways to attract new people to your audience is to take advantage of trending topics and current events, and weave them into your content.
If you can tie your content to current news trends and controversies, you can build a more engaged audience than you might have if you just provide straight information. The key here is that you must know your audience before you attempt this, as it can turn people off.
The second key is that you need to be a bit of a pot-stirrer yourself, as it takes some thick skin to wade into the middle of controversy and not get hurt by it. But, as long as you know yourself and what you can do (for instance, I could never do this because I don’t like to stir the pot), you can put these tips to work to build a strong, engaged audience for your business…
Tip #1 – Pay Attention to Developing Trends
It pays to watch what your competition is doing, and what’s going on in your niche overall. When you do this, you’ll start to notice trends as they develop and be on them earlier than your competition.
One way to do this is by using Google Alerts so that you always get the latest news. By always knowing the latest news in your niche and being able to spot the latest trends, you will be building up your authority as well as your audience.
Tip #2 – Tie Trends and Controversies into Your Business
This is where a lot of people who try to leverage current events and controversies get it wrong. You absolutely must tie whatever you’re talking about into your current business.
For example, if you run a marketing blog you don’t want to go off on a full-blown political rant that has nothing to do with your target market. However, you could certainly talk about the political climate and how it affects yours and your audience’s businesses. This way you can stir up the conversation without being judgmental or alienating those audience members who might have a different viewpoint than you.
Tip #3 – Don’t Be Afraid to Go Against the Trend
You don’t always have to go along with whatever the latest trend is. You want to build an audience that follows you because you’re you, so if you disagree with the current trend, don’t be afraid to say so.
If something doesn’t feel right to you, or you have experience and evidence to back up your thoughts then share them with your audience. Chances are if you’re feeling this way, then others are as well.
Tip #4 – Pick a Different Slant
One thing I’ve noticed with trends is that often the majority of people talking about them only do so from one point of view. If you can find a different slant to approach the topic from, you will set yourself apart from the masses and attract people who are interested in what you have to say.
Tip #5 – Pay Attention to Social Media
This goes along with the earlier tip about paying attention to your competition. You should also be paying attention to where your audience hangs out online when they’re not with you. Visit groups and forums to find out what type of issues are being discussed, and figure out how you can add to the discussion.
When you use social media strategically, you’d be amazed at the ideas for creating audience-building content you can come up with.
Tip #6 – Stick with What You Know
When writing a book, the common advice is to “write what you know.” The same holds true when creating content to attract an audience. If you’re tackling the latest trends or trying to create controversy, you don’t have to dive into areas where you’re not sure of yourself.
You can often be controversial just by going with your own beliefs, especially if they’re not on the same page as the rest of your niche. The key is to base your viewpoint on your own experiences and be able to back it up when questioned.
Tip #7 – Share Your Unique Voice
Building your audience is really about attracting people with the stories you tell. Your unique voice can play a huge role in creating an engaged audience for you, if you’re willing to use it.
For example, if you have experience with a current trend or controversy, sharing your story and how it affects your business is a great way to not only attract people to your business, but to let them get to know you a bit in the process.
Paying attention to current events, trends, and controversies can help you build a targeted, engaged audience if you do it right. By using your own unique voice and experiences, and not being afraid to go against the common view when necessary, you will attract people interested in what you have to say.
Providing interesting, out-of-the-box content positions you as an authority in your niche, and as you develop a loyal following, you will also find yourself getting more traffic, social shares, and comments on your blog, which helps you grow your audience even more.
