Amazon CreateSpace Publishing is Closing – Now What

Amazon CreateSpace Publishing is closing

Earlier this month, Amazon announced that they will be closing their CreateSpace division.  Many of us have just recently become familiar with the platform and then we hear “Amazon CreateSpace Publishing is closing. Can you believe it?  So now we have to learn a new platform.

While the books will still be showing available on Amazon and other places if you chose the expanded distribution, you will no longer be uploading and publishing your books through CreateSpace.
All paperback books are being transferred to KDP Paperback (Kindle Direct Publishing) service, little by little each day. My books were transferred last week and while you can still log into CreateSpace, there’s not much there and they are recommending that you get familiar with uploading your books through KDP.

Once all books are transferred, CS will be closed down completely. Many self-publishers are not very happy about this new development and I have to admit I was one of them in the beginning but now that I have become familiar with KDP’s process, it’s not so bad.

KDP will provide service as POD (Print on Demand) just as CS did and there is still no charge for uploading your books and you don’t have to have boxes of unsold books sitting in storage somewhere.

Differences Between the Publishing Platforms

There is not a great deal of difference between the functions of CS and KDP but there are some changes you have to get used to.

When I first started publishing on KDP, it was torture (almost one-and-a-half-hours to upload my interior file). But good news, they have worked out whatever caused the slow response times and it flows pretty easy now.

Per there are a few changes (see below) ( )

• Distribution: Reach paperback readers through Amazon websites in the US, Europe, and Japan.
• Royalties: Earn up to 60% royalties on the list price you set, minus printing costs.
• Rights: Maintain creative control and own your copyright with our non-exclusive agreement.
• Get to market fast: Publish your paperback for international sale in just a few days.
• 100% availability: Printing on demand means your book will never be out of stock.
• (Report information provided by

More Good News

…that might have gotten clouded over in this new venture is that the reporting of royalties will now be in one place.

Your payment information and reporting information will also be transferred with your books.

You can still get free ISBN numbers through KDP.

KDP has a cover creator for your book covers. You can create your covers through their creator or create your own outside of KDP and upload your cover to KDP.

Personally, I’ve found the review response time with KDP much faster than it was in CS. That of course may be due to the fact that not every book has been transferred over yet but they still state they will keep the review and publish to a reasonable length of time.

The Content Guideline Are About The Same

If there are any issues found with your book, they’ll let you know either by email or online in your KDP account.

Royalties From Book Sales

One thing I’m not real happy about but there’s nothing we can do about it. KDP Paperback royalties will be at 60% instead of 70%. The 10% royalty loss in my opinion is still less than if they charged us to upload a new book.

Free to All PAC Members

In light of all of the changes, I will be offering a hangout or a webinar for all PAC Members and for those of you who still haven’t thought about the transfer of your books or about learning the use of the KDP software.

So depending upon the response I receive, this will determine the mode of communication I’ll use and if there is enough interest at all.

Email me at: with a Subject line of KDP Hangout or Webinar. Let me know if you would like to attend this event and how many books you have on CreateSpace.

I’ll wait until October 5, 2018 to see who would like to participate in this event.

Along with reviewing the transfer process, I’ll also go through the upload process on the new system to let you see what the differences are between CS and KDP.

Again, there will be no charge to PAC Members.

All are welcome to attend but I will need to know how many to expect.

If you are not already a PAC Member, the charge for this will be $5.00 in PayPal  (
